Around 4,000 years ago, the oldest known recipe for beer was recorded in the Hymn to Ninkasi, which praised the Sumerian patron goddess of brewing. The Sumerians were known to treasure beer, as it was a safer alternative to water.
Not surprisingly, the tasty drink became a cherished commodity in the ancient world. For the next several hundred years, the fermented drink remained popular throughout Mesopotamia, Egypt and Europe.
