Lost in Translation
Plan to reimagine Downtown Salt Lake City leaves Japantown in the lurch, again.
Just west of Downtown Salt Lake City, a one-block section of 100 South bears the honorary name, “Japantown.” At its height, it was the center of a self-sufficient neighborhood of Japanese Utahns—with hotels, convenience stores and its own local newspapers. But the community’s legacy is now guarded by just two remaining buildings, The Japanese Church of Christ (JCC) and the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple (SLBT).
It wasn’t waning church membership, or lack of community interest that fueled Japantown’s downsizing. It was redevelopment.
