The data and experts agree: Americans are the most divided we’ve been, perhaps since the Civil War. We sharply disagree on most issues. But we do agree on something: The world is getting worse. Most American adults—as many as 80%, according to polls—are convinced that their children will have worse lives than they do.
We believe that our lives are worsening, and that little will be done about it. Not only is humanity in decline, the sentiment goes, but we have lost the capacity to progress. Research shows this is true whether the survey participants identify as left or right.
