Birthdays can evoke complicated emotions. For most, this ancient ritual brings people together to joyously mark the onward march of a cherished person or institution’s lifespan. These observances point to past accomplishments and those still to come. On occasion, however, they painfully highlight missed opportunities and closed doors.
Either kind of birthday experience can be beneficial, if they lead to healthy growth or unregretted future choices—no matter how old one gets. It remains to be seen what kind of birthday the United States will come away with upon reaching its big 250th.
