Fort Douglas, between the University of Utah and Red Butte Garden, was established in 1862 as a small military garrison to protect mail routes and telegraph lines along the Central Overland Route. There were about 100,000 Union army volunteers there, and the U.
S. government felt they had enough soldiers to send to the Utah Territory to not just protect travel and communication, but to keep watch over Native American tribes and the Mormons.
